Figure-use rule

Each figure is an orientation and reasoning aid, not a project drawing. Learners must pair it with the current sequence, point list, wiring/piping documents, manufacturer instructions, and as-found evidence.

Figure 1 — Pathway system, authority, and work-package trace critical

Normal-rule anchor

The shortest or familiar route is not automatically approved; source hierarchy and coordination control.

Case overlay

The reflected ceiling plan, electrical drawing, and controls detail show different routes around a rated corridor.

Calculation/evidence callout: Reconcile route dimensions, elevations, sources, interfaces, and unresolved conflicts.

Figure 2 — Raceway family, environment, and selection critical

Normal-rule anchor

Material names are not universal permissions; the approved complete system and exact use conditions govern.

Case overlay

A damp mechanical room and outdoor transition are shown with the same material and fittings as a dry office ceiling.

Calculation/evidence callout: Compare all required environmental, mechanical, dimensional, and listing fields; calculate material quantities and transitions.

Figure 3 — Route coordination, elevations, supports, and layout datum critical

Normal-rule anchor

Measure from controlled datums and actual endpoints; accumulated assumptions become visible misalignment and rework.

Case overlay

A panel hub and sensor box are at different elevations with duct, sprinkler, and access-door conflicts.

Calculation/evidence callout: Use drawing scale and dimensions to calculate lengths, elevations, support count from supplied criteria, and material allowance.

Figure 4 — Bender anatomy, take-up/deduct, gain, and stub-up 90s critical

Normal-rule anchor

Use the exact bender markings and verified reference table; memorized take-up from another tool is not evidence.

Case overlay

A 10-inch stub must land at a box, but the learner uses a take-up value from a different conduit size.

Calculation/evidence callout: Calculate mark=desired stub-take-up, verify developed length/gain using the supplied method, and check orientation.

Figure 5 — Offsets: rise, multiplier, spacing, shrink, and direction critical

Normal-rule anchor

An offset is geometry plus tool execution; multiplier and shrink values must come from the selected angle/method and be checked in the field.

Case overlay

A conduit must rise 4 inches over a beam and still land at a box centerline with limited run length.

Calculation/evidence callout: Compute spacing=rise x multiplier, shrink from supplied factor, new cut/landing position, and reasonableness against the route.

Figure 6 — Kicks, saddles, and rolling offsets critical

Normal-rule anchor

Advanced bends require a diagram, controlled references, plane/orientation marks, and verification; extra bends are not free.

Case overlay

The route shifts 6 inches sideways and 8 inches vertically around a pipe rack before a final box.

Calculation/evidence callout: Compute true rolling offset using the Pythagorean relationship, then multiplier spacing, shrink/allowance, and total bend.

Figure 7 — Boxes, fittings, entries, flex, supports, and workmanship critical

Normal-rule anchor

Fittings and supports are part of the approved pathway; making parts fit or look straight does not prove suitability.

Case overlay

A top entry creates a water path, flex lacks strain/support control, and a straight run is tied to another trade support.

Calculation/evidence callout: Reconcile material quantities and supplied box/entry/support criteria; calculate bend space, supports, defects, corrections, and reinspection coverage.

Figure 8 — Fill, conductor/cable area, and pull planning critical

Normal-rule anchor

Fill and pull limits depend on the actual conductors/cables, raceway, adopted rule, project, and manufacturer information.

Case overlay

A proposed run contains mixed controls cables, four 90-degree bends, no pull point, and no documented cable area.

Calculation/evidence callout: Sum supplied conductor/cable areas, apply the assigned criterion, calculate percent fill and total bend, and test alternatives.

Figure 9 — Penetrations, firestop, barriers, grounding/bonding interfaces critical

Normal-rule anchor

Penetration and firestop work preserves an assembly, not just a hole; exact listed system, trade scope, and AHJ/project process govern.

Case overlay

A controls raceway crosses a rated wall beside life-safety systems and the detail does not identify the firestop system.

Calculation/evidence callout: Reconcile penetrations by assembly/system/size/owner and calculate completion and inspection status.

Figure 10 — Release, correction, redline, and OJL defense critical

Normal-rule anchor

Pathway release requires all temporary marks/materials, open ends, defects, changes, and records reconciled.

Case overlay

Cable pull is scheduled, but one offset dimension, two supports, a penetration system, and the final redline are unresolved.

Calculation/evidence callout: Reconcile planned/installed/inspected/passed/corrected/reinspected/as-built counts and calculate pull-readiness completeness.
